Topic: Back to the beginning-How the AML regulatory industry was born, and how the lessons from it are relevant to bankers in protecting their bank, and themselves, today.

Former OCC examiner, bank compliance auditor, and bank compliance officer Brent Hamachek will discuss the events that lead up to the Bank Secrecy Act suddenly becoming the most important regulatory issue of the mid 1980’s, and the ensuing aftermath of regulatory zealousness and chaos. Presenter Brent Hamachek

Brent Hamachek founded Segueway in 2000 to serve the diverse needs of the privately-owned business market.  Segueway, based in the Chicago North Shore suburb of Glenview, works with companies in all stages of the business life cycle (startup, growth, mature, turnaround), and helps them with management, sales, finance, and funding.

Prior to forming Segueway, Brent spent 15 years in the banking industry, starting in 1985 as a member of the Office of the Comptroller of Currency in the Northeast Region.  Brent’s employment with the Agency coincided with the breaking news of money laundering at the Bank of Boston, the event from which all of today’s AML policies were born.  Regulations previously existing but little enforced became the number one priority in all bank examinations.

Brent became the BSA field examination expert for the OCC, created internal bank audit and compliance procedures for a New England multi-bank holding company, and served as the BSA and compliance officer for three different banks.  In the early 1990’s he also found himself at the cold face of the Community Reinvestment Act crisis in the Harris Bank system caused by sudden and zealous enforcement of a previously disregarded regulation.

Brent’s consulting practice now resides alongside the law firm of Fisher Cohen Waldman Shapiro, which has a rich history of banking regulatory compliance experience.  The firm has represented numerous bank officers and directors who have been personally pursued by various regulatory agencies as they attempt to attach personal liability to bank compliance matters.

Brent is a best-selling author whose words and ideas have been used in a successful Presidential campaign.  He also has spoken at The United Nations.  He speaks and trains frequently around the country on a variety of topics.
